A service upgrade is the most common large electrical job in this region, and it is very often booked by somebody who was not thinking about their panel a month earlier.
Three things arrived at once. Heat pumps replaced oil and propane across a lot of the older housing stock. Electric vehicles put a second continuous load on the same service. And insurers began treating fuse panels and undersized services as a rating factor rather than a curiosity, which turns a technical question into a renewal deadline.
The number, and what it covers
Published Ontario ranges for a 200 A service upgrade run roughly $2,250 to $4,500 in 2026.
That figure covers more than the panel. A service upgrade is the mast or the underground lateral, the meter base, the service entrance conductors, the bonding and grounding brought up to current code, the panel itself, the notification of work filed with the Electrical Safety Authority before anything starts, and the inspection after. It also covers coordinating a disconnect and reconnect with your distributor, which is the part that takes the longest and the part nobody quotes as a line item.
Where you start from moves it most
Going from 60 A to 200 A usually means a new mast, a new meter base, a new panel and often a grounding electrode that never existed. That is the upper end.
Going from 100 A to 200 A on a house from the 1970s or 1980s is frequently a panel and conductor change with the mast reused. Materially cheaper, and worth establishing which one you have before you budget.
The four things that actually move the price
1. The ground you are standing on
This is the biggest regional variable and the one no province-wide price guide mentions.
Bracebridge, Huntsville and Parry Sound sit on Canadian Shield granite with thin soil over it. A driven rod that goes in easily on clay stops at 300 mm on rock. The alternatives — multiple electrodes, greater depth, a concrete-encased electrode on new work, a plate — are decided on site by measurement, not in a quote.
Wasaga Beach has the opposite condition and a similar result. Dry sand is a poor conductor, and soil resistivity there is high enough that a single rod frequently will not achieve an acceptable reading. It also changes with the season, because resistivity in sand tracks moisture — an electrode that read acceptably in April can read very differently in August.
Bradford on the Holland Marsh is the easy case. The marsh gives an electrode a straightforward run. What it gives instead is water, which is a different problem and a cheaper one.
2. Which utility holds your town
Seventeen towns in this service area are served by nine different distributors, and the queue length is not the same in any two of them.
Orillia has been Hydro One since it acquired Orillia Power Distribution in 2020, so a disconnect there is scheduled through a provincial utility. Midland and Tay are Newmarket-Tay Power. Bracebridge, Huntsville and Parry Sound are Lakeland Power. Collingwood, Stayner, Creemore and Thornbury are EPCOR since it bought the former Collus utility. Bradford, Alliston and Penetanguishene are Alectra. Innisfil is InnPower. Orangeville still owns Orangeville Hydro. Wasaga Beach has Wasaga Distribution. Gravenhurst is Elexicon rather than Lakeland, despite being twenty minutes down Highway 11 from Bracebridge.
Penetanguishene and Midland share a harbour and a boundary and go through different queues. Assuming otherwise is how a job slips a fortnight.
3. The distance from the pole
Rural properties trend to the upper end because the run from the transformer is longer. Past a certain length voltage drop becomes the sizing constraint rather than ampacity, and the conductor goes up a size for reasons that have nothing to do with the panel.
Around Meaford and the orchard belt behind it, that is the normal case rather than the exception.
4. What else the house is asking for
If the upgrade is being done so a heat pump or a car charger can go in, the load calculation comes first and sometimes changes the answer. A level 2 charger is a continuous load counted at 125 percent of its rating. On a 100 A service already carrying an electric range, a dryer and a heat pump there is frequently no room — and occasionally an energy management system that sheds the charger when other loads run will solve it for a fraction of a service upgrade.
What we will tell you not to spend money on
A panel that is merely full is not a panel that is unsafe. A subpanel is frequently the cheaper and entirely correct answer, and where that applies the written findings say so.
Two-prong outlets in a house that has a grounding conductor can often be corrected with ground-fault protection and correct labelling rather than a rewire.
And a 60 A service is not automatically a fire risk. It is a capacity limit and an insurance problem, which are real reasons to act but are not the same as danger.
The paperwork is the part that bites later
A notification of work is filed with the Electrical Safety Authority before service work starts, and the inspection follows. That record is what a future buyer’s lawyer looks for.
Work done without a notification cannot be certified retroactively. If a previous owner upgraded a panel quietly, no report written today can create the record — the honest route is a notification covering the remediation, which is a conversation worth having before a sale rather than during one.
