A harbour town at the head of the bay with a long naval history, an old town grid, and a shoreline of docks that mostly predate the rule now governing them.
Two towns share this harbour and a boundary, and they do not share a utility. Penetanguishene is the clearest illustration in the whole service area of why you cannot read the distributor off a map.
Alectra, despite the neighbours
Midland and Tay, right next door, are Newmarket-Tay Power. Penetanguishene is Alectra Utilities — the large distributor whose territory otherwise sits well to the south.
So a service disconnect on one side of the line queues completely differently from one on the other. Assuming otherwise is how a job slips a fortnight, and it happens more often than you would think.
The harbour, and Section 78
The sheltered inner harbour carries a dense run of docks, boathouses and lifts. Section 78 of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code governs them separately from the rest of a property, and rule 78-050 requires ground-fault protection on exterior 15 A and 20 A receptacles.
Most of what is installed here went in before that applied.
Ice at the head of the bay
The inner harbour freezes hard and moves in spring, and the feeder is the least flexible thing bolted to a crib. Damage found in April is the normal case here rather than the exception, so we plan around it instead of being surprised by it.
The old town above the water
The streets above the harbour hold pre-war housing in the same bracket as Midland’s, with the same recurring finding: partly updated wiring, modern below and original above, joined somewhere nobody ever wrote down.
