Or an insurer who has decided the fuse panel has to go, and given you three weeks. Knowing which of those you are actually up against is most of the job.

What you get before anybody is booked
A free estimate commits nobody to anything. These are the parts we owe you whether or not the job comes to us.
Nine utilities cover this corridor. You hear which one is yours — with what it charges and how long it takes — on the first call.
A service upgrade is not one job, it is two — the wiring, and the utility connection. They have different fees, different lead times and different rules about what has to be ready first. A quote that never mentions yours is quoting half the job.
What is actually wrong, whether it can wait, and what fixes it — including when the honest answer is that nothing needs doing.
If a second opinion is what you actually want, that is a fine outcome — you will have the facts to go and get one.
Some of what people call us about is the distributor’s equipment, not the building’s wiring. That call is free and it ends with a phone number that is not ours.
Flickering across a whole street, a hot mast head, a loose service drop. Sending an electrician to those bills you for a diagnosis you can get for nothing.
None of these is about the workmanship. That belongs on the quote along with the licence number, and you should check both. These are what you get before you have decided anything.
What we do
An insurer, a lender, a purchase agreement or the code decides most of this work. Prices below are 2026 Ontario ranges, and the panel figure is a measured one rather than a number anybody here picked.
Sixty amps was plenty in 1962. It will not carry a heat pump, and your insurer has probably noticed the fuse panel by now.
Two wiring types insurers will not write. One has an accepted middle path that costs a fraction of a rewire. The other does not.
The charger is the cheap part. Whether your service can carry it is the whole question, and there is a cheaper answer than most people get offered.
Water, metal and electricity, with its own section of the code. Most of what is on the docks around this bay predates the rule that now governs it.
Not because the power fails more here. Because when it does, the crews are working outward from town and you are a long way down the list.
Nobody books one of these out of curiosity. It is an insurer, a lender or a home inspector, and there is usually a date attached.
Why the ground matters
Thin soil over Canadian Shield granite through Muskoka and Parry Sound. Dry sand at Wasaga Beach. Deep organic soil on the Holland Marsh at Bradford. A grounding electrode behaves differently in every one of them, and that is the most common reason two identical panels get quoted hundreds of dollars apart.

Not one of these turns up on an electrical page written for all of Ontario and swapped across forty markets. Every one of them changes either what a job costs or how long you wait to have it scheduled.

Roughly $2,250 to $4,500 for a 200 A service upgrade, on 2026 Ontario pricing. Coming up from 60 A usually means a new mast, meter base and panel, so that sits at the top of the range. Going 100 A to 200 A on 1970s or 1980s stock is often just a panel and conductor change, and lands lower. Rural properties trend higher, because the run from the pole is longer and grounding on Shield rock turns into its own small project.
Entirely depends on your town. Orillia is Hydro One, which took over Orillia Power Distribution in 2020. Midland and Tay are Newmarket-Tay Power. Bracebridge, Huntsville and Parry Sound are Lakeland Power, though Gravenhurst is Elexicon. Collingwood, Stayner, Creemore and Thornbury are EPCOR, which bought the old Collus utility. We book it for you — but the utility owns the calendar, and no electrician can talk it into moving.
Not by the code itself, no. In practice your insurer decides, and a great many will not write or renew a policy on a house with live knob and tube in it. Two situations make it genuinely urgent rather than merely awkward: wiring buried in attic insulation, which is the one thing it was never designed for, and a circuit somebody has extended with modern cable spliced in outside a box.
Usually, yes — and this is the good news on aluminium. Insurers frequently accept properly remediated terminations, meaning approved connectors at every device and junction, done throughout, instead of a full replacement. It costs a fraction of a rewire. Ask yours before you book anything, though, because the answer genuinely differs between insurers.
Not always, and it is worth checking before anyone quotes you one. A level 2 charger counts as a continuous load at 125 percent of its rating, so the answer depends on what the rest of the house already draws. On a 100 A service with an electric range, a dryer and a heat pump, there is frequently no room. But an energy management system that sheds the charger when other big loads run can make it work without upgrading anything, for far less money.
Docks get their own section. Section 78 of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code covers marine wharves, docking facilities, fixed and floating piers and boathouses, and rule 78-050 requires ground-fault protection on 15 A and 20 A receptacles on the exterior of them. A great deal of what is installed along this shoreline went in before that applied, and it is still there working away.
No, and the difference catches people out constantly. A contractor’s written assessment is what most insurers are asking for. An Electrical Safety Authority Certificate of Acceptance only exists where a notification of work was filed and the work was reviewed and passed — and that is the one lenders and municipalities frequently want. Work done quietly without a notification cannot be certified after the fact, whatever anybody tells you.
No. Quotes are free. If the honest answer is that the work does not need doing at all, or that a subpanel sorts it for a quarter of what a service upgrade costs, then that is what the quote says.
Tell us three things: the town, roughly when the building went up, and what the panel looks like — fuses or breakers, and the number on the main. That is usually enough to say whether you are looking at an afternoon, a scheduled job, or a conversation with your distributor first. Often enough to price it, too, without anybody driving anywhere.
