The well pump is usually the real reason
On a municipal service an outage is an inconvenience. No lights, no wifi, a slightly grim evening with a torch.
On a private well with a septic system it means no water and no sanitation. In February it can mean a frozen line as well. Automatic, or a manual interlock
An automatic transfer switch senses the outage, starts the generator and moves the selected loads across with nobody home. A manual interlock kit costs a fraction of that and needs somebody standing there to start the unit and throw the switch.
For a house somebody lives in, either can be right. For a property that sits empty for three weeks in January with a heat pump and a well pump in it, only the first one is protecting anything — because the failure it guards against happens while nobody is there to notice it.
Sizing, and what not to buy
Whole-house generators get sold constantly where an essential-loads panel would have done the same job for far less money.
Heat, water, refrigeration, a few circuits of light and one dedicated outlet covers the actual failure mode. What pushes a unit two sizes up is air conditioning and an electric range, and both of those can wait for the utility.
