The charger is the cheap part.
What decides the price of an EV installation is the distance from the panel, and whether the service has room for a continuous forty-amp load once everything else in the house is counted. Both questions are answered before the hardware is chosen, and one of them has a cheaper answer than most people are quoted.
The load calculation comes first
A level 2 charger is treated as a continuous load, which means it is counted at 125 percent of its rating. A 40 A charger is calculated as 50 A.
That number then goes into a calculation covering everything else the service carries: the range, the dryer, the water heater, the heat pump, the air conditioning. On a 100 A service already carrying an electric range, a dryer and a heat pump, there is frequently no room, and the honest answer is a service upgrade before a charger rather than a charger that trips the main.
On a 200 A service in one of the newer subdivisions — the growth around Bradford, Innisfil or Alliston — there almost always is room, and the job is a run and a breaker.
The answer most people are not offered
There is a second path worth asking about before accepting a service upgrade quote: an energy management system.
It sheds the charger when other large loads run, so the charger and the range never draw at once. Because the calculation is about the coincident peak, preventing that peak can make a charger work on a service a straight calculation says is full.
It is far cheaper than a service upgrade. It is not right for every house — if the service is genuinely undersized for the building’s ordinary life, the upgrade is the correct spend and the management system is a patch. But it should be on the table, and frequently is not.
What the run costs
A charger on the garage wall directly behind the panel is a short job.
A charger at a detached garage forty metres down a rural driveway is a trenched feeder, a subpanel and a grounding electrode at the far end, and it is a different quote entirely. Around Meaford, Creemore and the rural edges of most towns in this service area, that second case is common, because a lot of the housing here is not on a suburban lot.
Two regional details change the trench more than people expect. On the Shield around Bracebridge and Parry Sound, thin soil over granite makes both the trench and the grounding electrode at the far end a site decision rather than a line item. And past a certain run length, voltage drop becomes the sizing constraint rather than ampacity, so the conductor goes up a size for reasons unrelated to the charger.
Published range for a level 2 install on an adequate existing service: $900 to $2,800, including the load calculation and the notification of work.
Seasonal properties are their own case
Cottage installs on the bay and through Muskoka have a wrinkle the suburbs do not.
The property is unoccupied for long stretches, the service is often small, and the owner wants the car charged by the time they arrive. That points at scheduling and load management rather than at a bigger charger — there is no benefit to charging fast on a Friday if the car has been sitting since Sunday.
It also interacts with everything else a seasonal property runs. A place in Thornbury or Huntsville with a heat pump, a hot tub, snowmelt cable and now a car is a load calculation that comes back short far more often than the owner expects, because each of those was added separately and none of them was added with the others in mind.
The paperwork
A notification of work is filed with the Electrical Safety Authority before the installation and the work is inspected afterwards.
Some distributors also want to know about the added load, and around here that could be any of nine of them — Hydro One in Orillia, Newmarket-Tay in Midland, Lakeland across Muskoka, EPCOR in Collingwood, Alectra, InnPower, Orangeville Hydro, Wasaga Distribution or Elexicon.
As everywhere else in this trade, work done without a notification cannot be certified retroactively. A charger is a visible, recent, easily dated installation, which makes it one of the more awkward things to have undocumented when a house changes hands.
What we will tell you not to spend money on
Do not buy the biggest charger available. A 48 A unit on a service that can carry 32 A is money spent on a number you will never reach.
Do not upgrade the service before asking about load management, unless the house needs the capacity for its own sake.
And if the daily distance is short, level 1 charging from an ordinary outlet may genuinely be enough — roughly 6 to 8 km of range per hour, overnight, for no installation cost at all. That answer loses us the job, and it is the right answer often enough to be worth putting in writing.
